Women's Health - Natural Alternatives for Family Planning
The Filipino Family Fund subsidized an initiative of the Alliance for the Family Philippines, Inc. (ALFI) to sponsor training for 280 participants of the Billings Ovulation Method (BOM), a medically effective, culturally sensitive family planning method. The two phases of their progam, user training and home visitation, ensure that couples became familiar with the method. The seminars in October 2006 anticipated 200 participants. However, the response was greater. 280 participants committed their time to learn about alternatives to their present practices. Of this number, 100 participants were parish level family life coordinators. The response rate was amazing if you consider the recovery work needed in their area. Because of the recent typhoon, the fathers had to work, majority of them were repairing their houses destroyed by the strong typhoon. ALFI reported, “Participants were from the poor families of Cavite. Most of them are vendors selling rice cakes and dried fish. It was a day of great sacrifice for the participants because they had to stop their work and leave their children at home to learn about BOM. Most, if not all, of the participants claim that artificial means of contraception make them physically weak…. .” Two separate user training seminars were conducted for the depressed communities of Paliparan, Cavite, and of St. John the Baptist Parish, Quiapo Manila. These will be followed by three months of home visitation to the user training participants. Family Life Coordinators of the Diocese of Cavite and of the Vicariate of San Juan de Troso Quiapo, Manila also each had their separate BOM training. After their training, the family life coordinators decided to group themselves according to their respective Districts to plan on how to establish parish centers for Natural Family Planning.

Improving Women's Health with Medical Equipment Donations
The Filipino Family Fund worked with Human Life International-Philippines to help reform healthcare practices that were having adverse effects on women in the provinces. We were grateful to be in correspondence with the caliber of leadership who have been catalysts for change. We provided medical equipment when we learned that motherhood was being threatened in certain provinces. Dr. Rene Bullecer (left) and Dr. Ligaya Acosta (right) are champions for family and we are honored to know them.
